The "musk ox" is a large, stocky, and mammalian herbivore native to the Arctic regions of North America and Greenland. Scientifically known as Ovibos moschatus, it is part of the Bovidae family, which includes other hoofed animals like goats, sheep, and cattle.
In appearance, the musk ox is characterized by a thick and shaggy coat of hair that protects it from the harsh Arctic climate. Both males and females possess long horns that curve downward and inward, although the horns of males are larger and more imposing. With a shoulder height of around 4 to 5 feet and weighing up to 900 kilograms (2,000 pounds), musk oxen are known for their incredible strength and endurance.
The name "musk ox" stems from the strong musky odor emitted by adult males during mating season, which resembles the scent produced by musk deer. This odor serves as a means of communication and territorial marking, attracting females and warding off rivals.
Musk oxen are herbivorous animals and primarily feed on a variety of grasses, sedges, and shrubs. Their diet consists mainly of vegetation that remains accessible during the winter months by using their powerful hooves to excavate through layers of snow.
Due to their thick woolly coats, musk oxen have historically been hunted for their highly prized qiviut, which is the fine underwool used for crafting warm and luxurious garments. However, conservation efforts have helped protect and revive the musk ox population, ensuring their continued existence in the Arctic ecosystem.
