The detrusor muscle refers to a strong, smooth muscle layer present in the wall of the urinary bladder. It is primarily responsible for the contraction and relaxation of the bladder in order to facilitate the process of urination. The detrusor muscle receives its name from its ability to push or squeeze (detrude) the urine out of the bladder during bladder emptying.
Composed of involuntary muscle fibers, the detrusor muscle acts as a vital component of the urinary system. When the bladder is empty, the detrusor muscle is relaxed. However, as urine accumulates in the bladder, the detrusor muscle contracts under the control of the parasympathetic nervous system. This contraction causes increased pressure within the bladder, leading to the urge to urinate.
During the process of urination, the detrusor muscle contracts forcefully to expel urine from the bladder, while the sphincter muscles that surround the urethra relax to allow the passage of urine through the urethral opening. Conversely, when the bladder is full, the sphincter muscles contract to prevent the involuntary leakage of urine before the appropriate time.
A dysfunction or weakness in the detrusor muscle can lead to various urinary problems, such as urinary incontinence or the inability to completely empty the bladder. Treatments for detrusor muscle dysfunction may involve medication, lifestyle modifications, and, in some cases, surgical interventions.

The word "detrusor" is derived from the Latin term "dētrūdĕre", which means "to expel". The word "muscle" originates from the Latin term "musculus", meaning "muscle". Therefore, the term "detrusor muscle" refers to the muscle responsible for expelling or emptying the bladder.
