Cancer of Larynx, also known as laryngeal cancer, is a malignant tumor that forms in the tissues of the larynx, commonly referred to as the voice box. The larynx is located at the top of the windpipe, just below the throat. This type of cancer usually originates from the squamous cells lining the inside of the larynx.
Cancer of Larynx typically develops slowly, allowing for early detection and treatment. However, it can spread to nearby tissues, such as the vocal cords, voice box muscles, or lymph nodes, as it progresses. The main risk factors for developing this type of cancer include prolonged exposure to tobacco smoke, excessive alcohol consumption, and a history of having certain precancerous conditions of the larynx.
Symptoms of Laryngeal Cancer may include hoarseness or voice changes, persistent sore throat, difficulty or pain while swallowing, a lump or swelling in the neck, persistent cough, unexplained weight loss, and breathing difficulties. Diagnosis often involves a thorough physical examination, along with imaging tests like CT scans or MRIs, and a biopsy of the suspected tumor.
Treatment options for cancer of Larynx typically depend on the stage and location of the tumor. Treatment may involve surgery to remove the tumor, radiation therapy to kill cancer cells, and chemotherapy to destroy cancer cells or reduce their growth. Additionally, targeted therapy and immunotherapy may be considered for certain cases. Rehabilitation therapy may also be carried out after treatment to help recover speech and improve swallowing abilities. Regular follow-ups and monitoring are necessary to check for any recurrence or complications.
