Pericardia is a medical term that pertains to the plural form of pericardium. The pericardia are the protective membranes that surround and enclose the heart. The pericardium is a double-layered sac-like structure that consists of an outer fibrous layer called the fibrous pericardium and an inner serous layer known as the serous pericardium.
The fibrous pericardium is tough, dense, and composed of fibrous connective tissue. It acts as a protective shield, preventing overdistention of the heart, as well as anchoring the heart within the thoracic cavity.
The serous pericardium consists of two layers: the parietal layer and the visceral layer. The parietal layer lines the inner surface of the fibrous pericardium, while the visceral layer, also called the epicardium, adheres closely to the surface of the heart. The space between these two layers is known as the pericardial cavity, which is filled with a small amount of thin fluid called pericardial fluid.
The pericardia provide crucial protection and support for the heart. They reduce friction, cushion the heart against external forces, and help maintain a stable environment around the heart. Any disruption or inflammation of the pericardia, such as pericarditis, can lead to chest pain, difficulty breathing, and other complications.
