Tuberculids are a group of skin disorders characterized by papules or nodules that occur as a result of an immunological reaction in individuals with tuberculous infection. These lesions are classified as a cutaneous manifestation of tuberculosis and are usually found in individuals who have latent or active tuberculosis infection, as well as those who have been previously treated for tuberculosis.
The papules or nodules seen in tuberculids are typically small, firm, and flesh-colored. They can vary in size and may be solitary or multiple. Tuberculids are commonly found on the lower extremities, especially around the ankles and shins, but they can also occur on other areas of the body. The lesions are often symmetrical and may be accompanied by mild itching or discomfort. In some cases, the papules or nodules can ulcerate or become crusted.
The exact pathogenesis of tuberculids is not fully understood, but it is believed to be a hypersensitivity reaction to components of the tuberculous bacilli. Tuberculids are considered to be an extrapulmonary manifestation of tuberculosis, as they occur outside of the lungs. Management of tuberculids involves treating the underlying tuberculosis infection with appropriate anti-tuberculosis medications. In addition, symptomatic relief can be achieved through the use of topical corticosteroids or other anti-inflammatory agents. Close monitoring is essential to ensure resolution of the skin lesions and adequate control of the tuberculosis infection.
