Hypotension is a medical term used to describe low blood pressure. It refers to a condition in which the pressure exerted by the circulating blood on the walls of blood vessels is consistently lower than normal levels. Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and is expressed as two values: systolic pressure (the higher value) and diastolic pressure (the lower value). Hypotension is typically defined as having a systolic pressure below 90 mmHg and/or a diastolic pressure below 60 mmHg.
There are various causes of hypotension, including underlying health conditions or medications that affect the cardiovascular system. Common causes may include dehydration, blood loss, anemia, heart problems (such as heart failure or a weak heart), endocrine disorders (such as Addison's disease or thyroid dysfunction), nerve dysfunction, severe infection, or certain medications (like antihypertensives or diuretics). Hypotension can also occur as a result of sudden changes in position (known as orthostatic hypotension) or after prolonged bed rest.
Symptoms of hypotension may include dizziness, lightheadedness, blurred vision, fatigue, nausea, confusion, rapid or shallow breathing, cold and clammy skin, or fainting. Treatment of hypotension depends on the underlying cause and severity. Lifestyle modifications such as increasing fluid and salt intake, wearing compression stockings, and avoiding sudden changes in position may be recommended. In cases where hypotension is caused by an underlying medical condition, treating or managing that condition becomes essential. Severe hypotension may require immediate medical attention, involving intravenous administration of fluids, medications to raise blood pressure, or other interventions.
