These diseases primarily affect mammals, including humans, and are characterized by the formation of fluid-filled cysts or hydatids in various organs, most commonly the liver and lungs.
Individuals contract hydatidoses through the consumption of food or water contaminated with the eggs of the tapeworm, which are shed in feces by infected animals. Once ingested, the eggs release larvae that penetrate the intestinal wall, eventually reaching the bloodstream and spreading to different organs. Over time, these larvae form cysts that gradually expand and can reach several centimeters in size.
Hydatidoses can remain asymptomatic for years, with symptoms typically only appearing when the cysts become large or rupture. Common clinical manifestations may include abdominal pain, fever, coughing, dyspnea, and hepatomegaly. In severe cases, complications can arise due to cyst rupture, leading to anaphylactic shock or secondary infection.
The diagnosis of hydatidoses usually involves imaging techniques such as ultrasound, CT scans, or MRI, which can identify the cysts and provide information on their location, size, and potential complications. Treatment options for hydatidoses generally involve hydatid cyst removal, either through surgical excision or minimally invasive techniques, such as cyst puncture and aspiration.
Preventing hydatidosis mainly involves good hygiene practices, such as proper handwashing and thorough cooking of meat to kill potential tapeworm eggs. Additionally, regular deworming of domestic animals and control of stray animal populations can help reduce the prevalence of hydatidosis in endemic areas.
