Elaphurus is a genus of large deer in the family Cervidae, commonly known as the Père David's deer. It is native to China and was once extinct in the wild, but has been successfully reintroduced in certain protected areas in its native range. The genus Elaphurus comprises one extant species, Elaphurus davidianus, which is named after the French missionary and explorer Armand David.
Père David's deer is characterized by its distinctive physical traits. It has a large, robust body with long legs and a hump-like shoulder ridge. The males, known as stags, possess impressive antlers that are branched and can reach lengths of up to one meter. The coat of this deer is thick and coarse, usually gray-brown in color with a pale underside.
Historically, Elaphurus davidianus inhabited marshlands, river valleys, and floodplains of northern China. However, due to habitat destruction and hunting, the species experienced a severe decline in the late 19th century and was eventually declared extinct in the wild. It survived only in captive populations, thanks to a few individuals sent to Europe by Père David.
Conservation efforts and successful breeding programs have led to the reintroduction of Père David's deer into various reserves in China. These protected areas provide a safe environment for the species to thrive. The IUCN Red List currently categorizes Elaphurus davidianus as endangered, highlighting the ongoing need for conservation efforts to protect its population and habitat.
