DIALYSE Meaning and
Definition
-
To dialyse is a verb that refers to the process of removing waste and excess substances from the blood in individuals with kidney failure or impaired kidney function. This medical procedure aims to replicate the functions of the kidneys, such as filtering out toxins, balancing electrolytes, and regulating fluid levels in the body.
During dialysis, a special machine known as a dialyzer is used to filter the blood. The machine is connected to the patient's bloodstream through a surgically created access site, usually an arteriovenous fistula or graft. The blood flows through the dialyzer, which contains a semipermeable membrane. This membrane allows the removal of waste products and extra fluids while retaining essential substances.
Dialysis can be performed through different techniques, including hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Hemodialysis involves the use of an external machine, where blood is removed from the body, filtered, and returned after the process. Peritoneal dialysis, on the other hand, utilizes the abdominal lining (peritoneum) as a natural filter. A special fluid is introduced into the abdomen, and waste products and toxins pass from the blood vessels in the peritoneum into the fluid and can be drained out.
Dialysis serves as a life-sustaining treatment for individuals with kidney failure, as it helps maintain a stable balance of minerals and fluids in the body. The frequency and duration of dialysis sessions depend on the patient's condition and the recommendation of their healthcare team.

Etymology of DIALYSE
The word "dialyse" is derived from the Greek word "dialusis", which means "dissolution". "Dialusis" is a compound word, consisting of "dia", meaning "through", and "lysis", meaning "loosening" or "dissolution". The term "dialyse" was first used in the medical field, specifically in reference to the process of separating substances through a selectively permeable membrane, as in dialysis.
