Ursus arctos middendorffi, commonly known as the Kodiak bear, is a subspecies of brown bear native to the Kodiak Archipelago in southwestern Alaska, USA. It is one of the largest bears in the world and a notable example of the species Ursus arctos.
The Kodiak bear is characterized by its immense size, with males typically weighing between 900 to 1,600 pounds (410 to 730 kilograms) and females ranging from 600 to 900 pounds (270 to 410 kilograms). They stand at an impressive height of 9 to 10 feet (2.7 to 3 meters) tall when fully upright on their hind legs. Their fur ranges in color from dark brown to blonde, providing excellent camouflage in their natural environment.
These bears are primarily solitary creatures but are known to gather in groups during specific food-rich seasons. They have a diverse diet, encompassing both plant matter and meat. Their powerful jaws and sharp teeth allow them to prey upon fish, such as salmon, as well as small mammals, large ungulates, and insects.
Habitat loss and hunting have been the main factors contributing to the decline in Kodiak bear population. As a result, they are considered a threatened species and are protected under the Endangered Species Act.
