Transurethral prostate resections (TURP) is a surgical procedure performed to treat a condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). This condition refers to the enlargement of the prostate gland, which can cause urinary symptoms such as difficulty in urination, frequent urination, weak urine flow, and incomplete voiding. TURP is considered a standard and effective surgical intervention for BPH.
The TURP procedure involves inserting a surgical instrument called a resectoscope through the urethra into the prostate gland. The resectoscope consists of a light source, a camera, and a cutting tool. Using this instrument, the surgeon precisely removes or resects excess prostate tissue that is obstructing the urethra, in order to alleviate the urinary symptoms caused by BPH.
