Squamous cell papillomas, also known as squamous papillomas, are benign growths that develop on the skin or mucous membranes. These growths are classified as papillomas because they have a distinct raised or ear-like shape, resembling a small wart or a projecting mass. The term "squamous" refers to the type of cells that make up the growth, which are flat and scale-like in appearance.
Squamous cell papillomas are typically painless and can vary in size, ranging from very small lesions to larger masses. They commonly occur in areas where the skin is exposed to friction or moisture, such as the hands, feet, or genital region. However, they can also develop in the respiratory tract, mouth, or throat.
Although squamous cell papillomas are generally harmless, they can be unsightly or cause discomfort depending on their location. In some cases, they may become irritated or bleed when subjected to friction or trauma. Usually, these growths are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), a viral infection that can be transmitted through sexual contact or close skin-to-skin contact.
Treatment for squamous cell papillomas is not always necessary unless they interfere with daily activities or cause cosmetic concerns. If intervention is necessary, various options are available, including surgical excision, cryotherapy (freezing the growth), or laser therapy. It is important to note that squamous cell papillomas are not to be confused with squamous cell carcinomas, which are cancerous growths and require different treatment approaches.
