Squamous cell cancer, also known as squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), is a type of malignant tumor that arises from the squamous cells, which are thin, flat cells that are present on the surface of the skin and line various organs and structures within the body. It is the second most common form of skin cancer, accounting for approximately 20% of all skin cancer cases.
This type of cancer typically develops as a result of prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning beds, causing squamous cells to mutate and multiply rapidly. However, it can also occur in areas of the body not exposed to the sun, such as the mouth, lips, esophagus, lungs, or genitalia.
Squamous cell cancer often presents as a red, scaly patch or persistent sore that does not heal, and can become an ulcerated mass over time. If left untreated, it has the potential to spread to other tissues and organs, leading to more serious health consequences.
