Plateosaurus is a commonly known, extinct species of dinosaurs that belonged to the sauropodomorph group. It lived during the Late Triassic period, approximately 214 to 204 million years ago. The name "Plateosaurus" is derived from the Greek words "platys," meaning flat, and "sauros," meaning lizard, which refers to its rather broad and flattened shape.
This dinosaur was relatively large, measuring up to 33 feet in length and reaching heights of about 8 to 10 feet at the hip. It is believed to have weighed around 2 to 4 tons. Plateosaurus was characterized by its elongated neck, a long and muscular tail, and relatively short forelimbs compared to its hind limbs. It also had a small head with sharp, leaf-shaped teeth adapted for herbivorous feeding.
The significance of Plateosaurus lies in its evolutionary importance, as it represents one of the earliest and most primitive dinosaur groups that later gave rise to the massive, long-necked sauropods. It is also noteworthy for its bipedal locomotion, but it could also walk on all fours if needed. Fossil remains of Plateosaurus have been discovered in Germany and Switzerland, providing valuable insights into dinosaur anatomy, behavior, and the environmental conditions of the Late Triassic period.

The word "Plateosaurus" is derived from Ancient Greek. It consists of two parts: "platea" meaning "flat", and "sauros" meaning "lizard" or "reptile". Therefore, "Plateosaurus" can be translated to mean "flat lizard" or "flat reptile". The name refers to the flat shape of its bones.
