Plateosauravus is an extinct genus of herbivorous dinosaur belonging to the Plateosauridae family, which lived during the Late Triassic period, approximately 210 million years ago. The name "Plateosauravus" is derived from the Greek words "plateo" meaning "flat" and "sauros" meaning "lizard," along with the suffix "-avus" meaning "ancestor." It is considered to be one of the earliest members of the Plateosauria group.
The physical characteristics of Plateosauravus are known only from fragmentary remains, making it difficult to fully reconstruct its appearance. However, based on related species within the family, it is believed to have been a bipedal dinosaur with a long neck, a small head, and a long tail. It would have had strong hindlimbs and shorter forelimbs with five fingers. Plateosauravus likely had a sturdy body structure and reached an estimated length of about 4.5 to 6 meters.
As a herbivore, it is believed that Plateosauravus fed on various types of vegetation such as ferns, cycads, and conifers. It likely inhabited terrestrial environments, possibly living in herds to provide protection against predators.
