Northern Night Monkeys, scientifically known as Aotus trivirgatus, are a species of nocturnal primates native to the northwestern regions of South America, including Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil. They belong to the family Aotidae and are often referred to as owl monkeys due to their large, round eyes resembling those of an owl.
These small-sized primates typically measure between 30 and 40 centimeters (12-16 inches) in length, excluding their long, prehensile tails. Their fur coloration varies among individuals but commonly includes shades of gray or brown, providing effective camouflage in their forest habitats. Their nocturnal behavior allows them to be active during the night when they feed on a variety of foods, including fruits, leaves, insects, small vertebrates, and even bird eggs.
Northern Night Monkeys are known for their strong social bonds and monogamous mating system. They primarily dwell in small family groups consisting of a mated pair and their offspring. These monkeys communicate using various vocalizations, including whistles, hoots, and trills.
Due to habitat loss, deforestation, and illegal pet trade, the Northern Night Monkey is facing threats to its population and is listed as "vulnerable" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
