The term "nilghai" refers to a large, sturdy antelope species native to the Indian subcontinent, scientifically known as Boselaphus tragocamelus. It is commonly known as the "blue bull" due to the distinct bluish-gray coat found in males. This species belongs to the Bovidae family and is predominantly found in the open grasslands and forest areas of India, Nepal, and Pakistan.
The nilghai is characterized by its robust build, with males weighing around 200 to 250 kg, and females weighing approximately 120 to 220 kg. Its body is adorned with short, erect hair and a dense mane that extends from the back of the head to the shoulders. The males differentiate themselves by their striking blue-gray coat, while the females exhibit a lighter brown coloration.
Nilghais are herbivorous animals, primarily feeding on grass, leaves, and branches. They have adapted to survive in various habitats and are highly adaptable to changing landscapes. These antelopes are known for their remarkable ability to leap over considerable heights when fleeing from predators.
Despite their size and strength, nilghais are relatively docile and non-territorial animals. They move in small herds comprising a dominant male, numerous females, and their offspring. During mating season, males engage in aggressive battles to establish dominance and win the right to mate.
