HTLV I antibodies refer to antibodies that are produced by the immune system in response to an infection with the human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I). HTLV-I is a retrovirus that primarily infects and replicates in immune cells called T-lymphocytes. It is known to be associated with several diseases, including adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) and a neurological disorder called HTLV-I-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP).
When a person is infected with HTLV-I, the immune system recognizes the virus as foreign and mounts an immune response, producing antibodies against the virus.
