The eastern grey squirrel, scientifically known as Sciurus carolinensis, is a species of squirrel predominantly found in eastern North America. This arboreal rodent is characterized by its distinctive grey fur which serves as effective camouflage in its habitat. With a body length averaging around 20 to 23 centimeters (8 to 9 inches) and a bushy tail that measures roughly 19 to 25 centimeters (7 to 10 inches), the eastern grey squirrel has a compact and agile build, enabling it to effortlessly navigate trees and leap between branches.
This diurnal mammal is highly adaptable and can be found in a wide variety of habitats, including forests, urban parks, and suburban areas. An omnivorous creature, the eastern grey squirrel has a diverse diet consisting of nuts, seeds, tree bark, shoots, fruits, and occasionally invertebrates. It has also been known to bury nuts and seeds for later consumption, helping to disperse and regenerate plant species in its environment.
Though typically solitary, these squirrels display complex social behaviors and communicate through a variety of vocalizations, tail movements, and facial expressions. Eastern grey squirrels generally breed twice a year, producing a litter of 2 to 4 young. They build leaf nests, known as dreys, or may occupy abandoned bird nests for shelter.
While considered a charismatic and popular animal, eastern grey squirrels are also known to be invasive in some regions, competing with native red squirrel populations and causing damage to tree bark.
