They are commonly referred to as the "hooded shrimp" and are found in both marine and brackish water environments throughout the world. Cumacea typically have elongated bodies, measuring around 5 to 30 millimeters in length, with a specialized structure called a carapace that covers the upper surface of their head and thorax, resembling a hood. This carapace is a distinguishing characteristic of the order.
Members of the Cumacea order possess various adaptations that allow them to thrive in their diverse habitats. They generally have well-developed antennae and mouthparts, which they utilize to capture small particles of organic matter from the water column or sediment. The flattened body shape and stout appendages of Cumacea enable them to move efficiently through the substrate, where they often burrow for protection and food acquisition.
