Woolly Monkey Virus, also known as WMV, is a viral pathogen that primarily affects woolly monkeys, a group of New World primates native to the Amazon rainforest. It belongs to the family Retroviridae and the genus Lentivirus, which includes viruses known to cause several diseases in animals and humans.
WMV is transmitted through contact with bodily fluids, particularly blood, saliva, and genital secretions, of infected woolly monkeys. It can be spread through bites, scratches, sexual contact, or even ingestion of contaminated food or water. Once the virus enters the body, it targets the immune system, particularly the white blood cells, and gradually weakens the overall immune response.
In woolly monkeys infected with WMV, symptoms can vary but often include fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, weight loss, and respiratory problems. The virus can also cause immunodeficiency, leading to increased susceptibility to secondary infections. In severe cases, infected monkeys may experience organ failure, neurological disorders, or even death.
While WMV primarily affects woolly monkeys and poses a significant threat to their populations, there is no evidence to suggest that it can be transmitted to humans. However, caution should be exercised when handling or being in close proximity to infected animals to avoid any potential risks.
