Whitetail prairie dog is a term used to describe a specific species of small rodent native to the grasslands of North America. It belongs to the squirrel family, Sciuridae, and is scientifically known as Cynomys leucurus.
The whitetail prairie dog gets its name from the distinctive white patch of hair on its tail. It has a compact and stout body, measuring about 12-16 inches in length, and is characterized by a large head and prominent dark eyes. Its fur varies in color, ranging from light brown to reddish-brown, providing excellent camouflage within its grassland habitat.
These animals are primarily herbivores, feeding on grasses, seeds, and other vegetation. They are highly social creatures, living in large communities called colonies or towns, which can range from a few individuals to thousands. Each colony consists of multiple interconnected burrow systems that provide shelter and protection from predators.
