Etymology of VERO CELLS
The term "Vero" in Vero Cells is derived from the name of the species of cells from which they were originally isolated. Vero cells are a continuous line of African Green Monkey Kidney epithelial cells, which were isolated in 1962 from the kidney tissue of a healthy adult African Green Monkey (Cercopithecus aethiops) by researchers at the Chiba University in Japan. The name "Vero" is an abbreviation of "Verda Reno" which means "true kidney" in Latin, indicating that these cells closely resemble the original tissue from where they were isolated.
