It comprises of a small, disc-shaped body measuring about two to three centimeters in length, crowned with a clear, stiff sail that allows it to float on the ocean's surface.
The sail of Velella has an exquisite blue-violet coloration, giving it the characteristic name "purple sail." This species is capable of limited travel through the ocean, primarily driven by the wind. The hydrozoan colony of Velella contains specialized individuals known as polyps, which are responsible for reproduction and feeding.
