Tamaraws are massive creatures, with males growing up to two meters in height and weighing around 600 kilograms. They possess a sturdy build, a stocky body, and large horns that curve backward. Their physical appearance is characterized by a dark brown or black coat, which becomes lighter on their underbellies.
These herbivores primarily inhabit forested areas and grasslands, where they feed on various types of grasses, young leaves, and stems. Due to deforestation, habitat loss, hunting, and diseases introduced by domesticated animals, the tamaraw population has drastically declined over the past century. As a result, it is currently listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

In the Tagalog language, the word for this animal is "tamaraw", which then got pluralized to "tamaraws" when referring to multiple animals.
