Tabes mesenterica, also referred to as mesenteric lymphadenitis or tuberculous mesenteritis, is a chronic inflammatory condition that primarily affects the mesenteric lymph nodes, located in the mesentery - the membranous tissue that connects the intestines to the abdominal wall.
This medical condition generally arises as a consequence of tuberculosis (TB) infection, although it can also result from other infectious agents or systemic diseases. Tabes mesenterica typically manifests as abdominal pain, tenderness, and swelling, specifically in the lower right quadrant of the abdomen. These symptoms are often accompanied by diminished appetite, weight loss, fatigue, and occasionally low-grade fever.
The inflammation observed in tabes mesenterica is caused by the accumulation of caseous material, which is a soft and cheese-like substance consisting of necrotic tissue. This material collects in the mesenteric lymph nodes, impairing their functional capacity and leading to the characteristic symptoms. Focal or generalized lymph node enlargement may be observed upon medical examination.

Treatment of tabes mesenterica involves the administration of antimicrobial agents, primarily antibiotic therapy, to eradicate the underlying infection causing the disease.
If left untreated or in severe cases, tabes mesenterica can lead to serious complications such as intestinal obstruction, perforation, or abscess formation. Therefore, prompt diagnosis and appropriate management are crucial to prevent further complications and facilitate the resolution of symptoms.
