Rudolf Diesel (1858-1913) was a German inventor and mechanical engineer who is best known for inventing the diesel engine. Born in Paris, France, Diesel was the second of three children in his family. He graduated as an engineer from the Industrial School of Augsburg and later continued his studies at the Polytechnic Institute in Munich, Germany.
Diesel's most significant invention, the diesel engine, was patented in 1892. The diesel engine differs from traditional internal combustion engines in its operation, as it ignites the fuel by compressing it rather than using a spark plug. This efficient and powerful engine differs from gasoline engines in its ability to produce high torque, making it ideal for heavy-duty applications such as in commercial vehicles, ships, and power plants.
Despite its initial success, Diesel's invention faced significant challenges and controversies during his lifetime. He struggled with financial difficulties and the theft of his designs by others, leading him to engage in patent litigations. In 1913, at the age of 55, Diesel mysteriously disappeared during a steamship journey, and his body was later discovered in the English Channel.
