RNA tumor viruses, also known as retroviruses, belong to a family of viruses that possess RNA (ribonucleic acid) as their genetic material instead of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). These viruses have the unique ability to convert their RNA genome into DNA and integrate it into the host cell's DNA, resulting in a long-term infection. RNA tumor viruses are characterized by their tendency to cause tumor formation in various host organisms, including animals and humans.
RNA tumor viruses have been extensively studied for their role in oncogenesis, or the process of tumor formation.
