A puffing adder, also known as an African puff adder, is a venomous snake belonging to the viper family, Viperidae. Scientifically named Bitis arietans, it is native to sub-Saharan Africa and is regarded as one of the most widespread and dangerous snakes on the African continent.
Physically, the puffing adder is a medium-sized snake with a stout body and a distinctive triangular-shaped head. It derives its common name from its well-known defensive behavior of puffing up its body, making itself appear larger, when threatened. This puffing is achieved by filling its lungs with air, causing its scales to spread and give it an intimidating appearance.
Typically, the puffing adder possesses a complex series of color patterns varying from pale tan to reddish-brown, adorned with irregular, dark blotches that often blend in with the surroundings. This camouflage helps it to remain well-disguised, waiting for prey to pass by unknowingly.
As a venomous snake, the bite of a puffing adder can be highly dangerous to humans and other animals. Its venom is cytotoxic, causing significant tissue damage, pain, and swelling. If left untreated, it can lead to severe complications or even death.
Due to its close proximity to human settlements and its inclination to camouflage itself, the puffing adder is responsible for numerous snakebite incidents in Africa.
