Presbytes entellus, also known as the gray langur or hanuman langur, is a species of Old World monkey belonging to the family Cercopithecidae. It is native to the Indian subcontinent, where it is widely distributed across various habitats such as forests, rocky areas, and urban environments.
The gray langur is a large and robust primate, typically measuring about 50 to 75 centimeters in body length, with a long tail adding an additional 60 to 100 centimeters. It has a distinct fur coloration which varies from gray or brown to darker shades, depending on the subspecies. The face of this monkey is marked by a black face mask and it possesses a prominent crest of long hair.
Presbytes entellus is primarily herbivorous, feeding on a wide variety of plant matter including leaves, fruits, flowers, and seeds. They are known for their highly adaptable behavior and ability to survive in various ecological niches.
Behaviorally, these langurs live in large, hierarchical groups that include multiple males, females, and their offspring. Group size can range from 10 to 80 individuals. Within the social structure, males compete for dominant status through ritualized displays and aggressive behavior.
Due to their adaptability and large population, presbytes entellus is currently classified as a species of "Least Concern" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). However, localized threats such as habitat loss, poaching, and conflicts with humans are impacting certain populations of this species.
