Premature Atrial Complex (also known as PAC) is a cardiac arrhythmia characterized by irregular heartbeats originating from the atria of the heart. The condition occurs when the electrical signals in the atria fire prematurely or abnormally, causing the heart to beat out of its regular rhythm. PAC is considered a benign arrhythmia and is generally not a cause for concern, although it can be worrisome to individuals experiencing its symptoms.
During a premature atrial complex, an extra, abnormal electrical signal occurs in the atria, causing them to contract earlier than expected. This can disrupt the normal sequence of electrical impulses in the heart and interfere with the regular heartbeat. PACs are often felt as a noticeable pause or skipped beat, followed by a more forceful heartbeat.
Common causes of PAC include stress, caffeine consumption, alcohol or drug use, smoking, fatigue, and certain medical conditions such as hypertension. PACs can occur in individuals of all ages, but they are more common in older adults and individuals with underlying heart disease. In many cases, PACs are asymptomatic and do not require any specific treatment. However, if symptoms become bothersome or disruptive, medical intervention may be necessary.
Treatment options for PAC may involve managing the underlying causes and triggers such as reducing stress, quitting smoking, avoiding excessive caffeine or alcohol intake, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Certain medications and anti-arrhythmic drugs may also be prescribed to regulate the heart's electrical activity and prevent the occurrence of PACs.
