The symptoms of pleurisy can include sharp, stabbing chest pain that worsens with deep breaths or coughing, shortness of breath, and a dry cough. The pain experienced is often described as a pleuritic chest pain, which can be localized to one side of the chest or spread throughout the chest cavity.
Pleurisy can occur as a result of various underlying conditions, including respiratory infections like pneumonia or tuberculosis, autoimmune disorders such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis, lung cancer, pulmonary embolism, or trauma to the chest. The inflammatory response within the pleura leads to the production of excess fluid, causing a condition known as pleural effusion.
Diagnosing pleurisy usually involves a combination of physical examination, patient history, and imaging tests like chest X-rays or CT scans. To treat pleurisy, the underlying cause should be addressed, and pain management may involve the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), cough suppressants, or antibiotics if bacterial infection is present. Occasionally, more invasive procedures like thoracentesis may be required to drain excess fluid from the pleural cavity.
