PAPI is an abbreviation that stands for Precision Approach Path Indicator. It is a visual aid system used in aviation to assist pilots during the approach and landing phase of an aircraft. The PAPI system helps pilots to maintain the correct glide path, ensuring a safe and precise descent to the runway.
PAPI typically consists of a row of lights located on the left or right side of the runway. These lights emit a combination of red and white colors. When viewed by the pilot from the cockpit, the different colors indicate whether the aircraft is on the correct glide path.
If the pilot sees two white lights and two red lights, this indicates that the aircraft is on the correct glide path and approaching the runway at the proper angle. If the lights appear higher and display more red than white, the aircraft is flying too high and needs to adjust its descent. Conversely, if the lights appear lower and display more white than red, the aircraft is flying too low and needs to climb.
