Panleukopenia Virus, also known as Feline Panleukopenia Virus (FPV), is a highly contagious viral disease that affects cats. It belongs to the family Parvoviridae and is closely related to the canine parvovirus. The virus primarily attacks rapidly dividing cells in the body, particularly those in the bone marrow, intestines, and lymphoid tissue, resulting in a severe decrease in white blood cells (leukopenia).
Panleukopenia Virus is typically transmitted through direct contact with an infected cat's bodily fluids, such as urine, feces, saliva, and nasal secretions. It can also be transmitted through contaminated objects and surfaces. The virus can survive in the environment for months, making it highly resistant and capable of infecting cats that come into contact with contaminated areas.
Cats infected with Panleukopenia Virus may exhibit a range of symptoms, including fever, loss of appetite, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea (often bloody), and dehydration. In severe cases, the disease can lead to neurological signs, such as incoordination and seizures. Kittens are particularly vulnerable and can suffer from abortion or birth defects if their mother is infected during pregnancy.
Prevention of Panleukopenia Virus primarily involves vaccination. Proper, timely vaccination is crucial to protect cats from this potentially fatal disease. In cases of infection, supportive care is vital, and affected cats may require hospitalization, fluid therapy, antibiotics, and symptomatic treatment.
