The Organization of American States (OAS) is a regional intergovernmental organization that promotes and seeks to strengthen multilateral cooperation among its member states. Comprising of 35 independent nations from North, Central, and South America, as well as the Caribbean, the OAS was established on April 30, 1948, through the signing of the OAS Charter in Bogotá, Colombia.
The main objective of the OAS is to promote and defend democracy, human rights, security, and development in the Americas. It serves as a forum for political dialogue, cooperation, and decision-making among its member countries. The OAS seeks to foster peace, stability, and solidarity in the region, while also addressing common challenges and enhancing collaboration on economic, social, and cultural issues.
The organization operates through its General Assembly, which is composed of representatives from each member state and serves as the highest decision-making body. The OAS also has a Permanent Council, where member states meet regularly to discuss and coordinate actions on regional issues. Its Secretariat, headed by the Secretary-General, facilitates the implementation of policies and programs, as well as the coordination of specialized agencies and entities within the organization.
The OAS engages in a wide range of activities, including electoral observation, conflict resolution, promotion of human rights and sustainable development, combatting corruption and drug trafficking, and supporting democratic transitions. It serves as a platform for countries to exchange experiences, cooperate on initiatives, and collectively address common concerns, ultimately aiming to promote a prosperous and integrated region marked by democracy, rule of law, and respect for human rights.
