The northern white rhinoceros is a critically endangered species of rhinoceros native to the grasslands of East and Central Africa. Known scientifically as Ceratotherium simum cottoni, it is one of two subspecies of white rhinoceros, the other being the southern white rhinoceros.
The northern white rhinoceros is characterized by its immense size, robust build, and two large horns made of keratin on the nasal area. It is the largest species of rhinoceros, with some individuals reaching lengths of up to 4.5 meters (14.7 feet) and weighing over two tons. Its skin is grayish-brown in color and appears wrinkled.
Historically, the northern white rhinoceros had a much wider distribution, inhabiting several African countries. However, due to rampant poaching and habitat loss, its population has dwindled to only a handful of individuals. As of 2021, it is considered functionally extinct in the wild, with two surviving female individuals residing in protected sanctuaries in Kenya.
