Neurotransmission is a complex physiological process in which information is exchanged between neurons within the nervous system. It involves the transmission of electric and chemical signals across the synapses, which are the junctions between neurons.
During neurotransmission, an electrical impulse, known as an action potential, travels down the axon of the presynaptic neuron. As it reaches the end of the axon, specialized structures called synaptic vesicles release chemical substances known as neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft.
These neurotransmitters diffuse through the synaptic cleft and bind with specific receptors on the postsynaptic neuron, triggering a series of biochemical events. This binding can either excite or inhibit the postsynaptic neuron, affecting its ability to generate an action potential.
Once the neurotransmitters have carried out their function, they are either reabsorbed by the presynaptic neuron through a process called reuptake or broken down by enzymes in the synaptic cleft to terminate their effects. This mechanism allows for precise regulation of signaling within the nervous system.
Neurotransmission is essential for the proper functioning of the nervous system, as it enables communication between neurons, allowing for sensory perception, motor coordination, learning, memory, and many other cognitive and behavioral processes. Dysregulation or disturbances in neurotransmission can contribute to various neurological and psychiatric disorders, such as depression, anxiety, or Parkinson's disease.
