Nepomuk, also known as Saint John of Nepomuk, is a popular and venerated Catholic saint who lived in the 14th century. Originating from the town of Nepomuk, located in what is now the Czech Republic, he is recognized for his martyrdom and devotion to protecting the seal of the sacrament of confession.
According to legend and historical records, Nepomuk was the confessor of Queen Johanna of Bohemia. Refusing to break the confidentiality of the Queen's confessions, he was ultimately executed by being thrown off the Charles Bridge in Prague. This act of martyrdom led to his canonization by the Roman Catholic Church.
Throughout the centuries, Nepomuk has become known as the patron saint of bridges, the protector against floods and drowning, and the guardian of secrets.
