It is an acronym for a rebel group that operated in Liberia during the country's two civil wars, which occurred between 1989 and 2003. The group was established in 1999 as an armed insurgency to overthrow the government led by President Charles Taylor.
The objective of LURD was to seek reconciliation and democracy for Liberians by challenging President Taylor's regime. They aimed to address political grievances and promote social justice within the country. LURD was mainly composed of dissident factions and rebel leaders who were dissatisfied with the Taylor government's policies.
