Leviviridae is a family of small, spherical-shaped, non-enveloped viruses that infect bacteria. The name "Leviviridae" is derived from 'levi' (meaning smooth) and 'viridae' (indicating a viral family). These viruses are known to have a positive-sense, single-stranded RNA genome and possess a T=3 icosahedral symmetry.
Members of the Leviviridae family are commonly found in environments rich in bacteria, such as soil, water, and the gastrointestinal tracts of animals. They primarily infect enteric bacteria like Escherichia coli (E. coli). The infection process involves the attachment of the virus to specific receptors present on the bacterial cell surface, followed by the injection of its genetic material into the host cell. Once inside, the viral genome is used to hijack the bacterial machinery, replicating and producing multiple copies of the virus. Eventually, the host cell is lysed, releasing progeny virions to infect neighboring bacteria.
