LCIS stands for Lobular Carcinoma In Situ, which is a non-invasive type of breast cancer. It is a condition where abnormal cells develop and multiply in the lobules, the milk-producing glands of the breast, but do not invade the surrounding tissues. LCIS is often discovered incidentally during a breast biopsy performed for other reasons, such as the evaluation of a suspicious lump or for routine screening.
Although LCIS is categorized as a form of breast cancer, it differs from invasive breast cancer because it does not pose an immediate threat to a person's health or life.
