IANTIGENS are specific proteins that are commonly found in insects and other arthropods. The term "IANTIGENS" is an acronym derived from "Insect Allergens." These proteins can trigger an immune response in individuals who are allergic or sensitive to insect bites or stings.
When insects bite or sting humans, they inject their saliva or venom into the skin, which contains these IANTIGENS. The human immune system recognizes these foreign proteins as potential threats and releases chemicals such as histamine to defend against the “invaders.” In individuals with insect allergies, the immune system overreacts, causing inflammation, itching, redness, and in severe cases, anaphylaxis.
IANTIGENS can be found in various insects, including bees, wasps, hornets, fire ants, mosquitoes, and horseflies. These allergenic proteins are usually found in the insect's saliva, venom sacs, or stingers. The specific proteins vary among different insect species, leading to different allergic reactions in humans.
In some cases, individuals may develop systemic allergic reactions to IANTIGENS, resulting in symptoms such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, rapid heartbeat, and dizziness. Anaphylaxis is a severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction that requires immediate medical attention.
To manage allergies to IANTIGENS, allergists may recommend avoiding exposure to insects, using insect repellents, wearing protective clothing, and carrying an epinephrine auto-injector (EpiPen) for emergency treatment. Immunotherapy, known as allergy shots, may also be suggested to modify the immune response over time.
