Hyperlactation is a term used in the medical field to describe a condition in which a breastfeeding mother produces an excessive amount of breast milk. It occurs when the breasts produce a higher volume of milk than the baby is able to consume during feedings. This excess milk production can cause several challenges and complications for both the mother and the baby.
Women with hyperlactation often experience engorgement, where their breasts become swollen, hard, and painful due to the overabundance of milk. The baby may struggle to latch properly onto the breast, leading to difficulty in feeding and possibly causing the baby to swallow excessive air. This can result in gassiness, fussiness, and an increased risk of developing colic.
Additionally, hyperlactation can lead to an oversupply of foremilk (the watery milk that comes first during a feeding) and a decreased amount of hindmilk (the high-fat milk that follows), which can affect the baby's nutrition. The baby may also struggle to empty the breast completely, which can contribute to blocked milk ducts, mastitis (inflammation of the breast tissue), and an increased risk of developing breast infections.
Treatment options for hyperlactation involve managing milk production through techniques such as block feeding, using compresses to regulate milk flow, and seeking professional guidance from lactation consultants.
