Hydrodamalis gigas, commonly known as the Steller's sea cow, was a large marine mammal that once inhabited the waters around the Commander Islands in the Bering Sea. It was first described by Georg Wilhelm Steller, a German naturalist, in 1741 during the Vitus Bering expedition.
The Steller's sea cow was one of the largest members of the Sirenia order, reaching lengths of up to 25 feet (7.6 meters) and weighing up to 8,800 pounds (4,000 kilograms). It had a robust body with a thick layer of blubber, a rounded snout, and a powerful tail. Its front limbs were modified into flippers that aided in propulsion while swimming.
This herbivorous animal primarily fed on large kelp and other marine plants that were abundant in the coastal waters it inhabited. Its molars were specifically designed to grind plant matter, enabling efficient digestion.
Sadly, the Steller's sea cow was driven to extinction less than 30 years after its discovery. Its slow swimming speed, docile nature, and its ability to produce abundant meat, oil, and hides made it an easy target for hunters. Overhunting and exploitation for its valuable resources resulted in its rapid decline, ultimately leading to the demise of the species by 1768.
