Hydrocystoma is a medical term used to describe a benign, cystic growth on the skin that arises from a sweat gland. It is often found in areas where there are numerous sweat glands, such as the face, neck, or scalp. Hydrocystomas typically appear as small, dome-shaped bumps that are translucent and filled with clear fluid.
These cysts commonly develop slowly over time and are usually painless. They may vary in size, ranging from a few millimeters to a centimeter in diameter. Hydrocystomas can be classified into two primary types: eccrine and apocrine.
Eccrine hydrocystomas originate from the eccrine sweat glands, which are responsible for regulating body temperature. They are commonly found in the eyelids and forehead and can sometimes be mistaken for other skin conditions, such as skin tags or milia.
Apocrine hydrocystomas, on the other hand, arise from the apocrine sweat glands, which are mainly located in the underarms and genital areas. These cysts are less common and may have a similar appearance to eccrine hydrocystomas.
Although hydrocystomas are typically benign and do not require treatment, they can be cosmetically bothersome. In some cases, individuals may opt for removal if the cysts cause discomfort or affect their self-esteem.
