HSV-1 primarily causes oral herpes, commonly known as cold sores or fever blisters. This type of herpes typically results in sores or blisters around the mouth, lips, or face. While HSV-1 mainly affects the oral area, it can also cause genital herpes through oral-genital contact.
HSV-2 primarily causes genital herpes, which is a sexually transmitted infection (STI). It is mainly transmitted through sexual contact and can result in sores or blisters on the genitals, buttocks, or surrounding areas. Genital herpes is highly contagious, and it is possible to transmit the virus even when symptoms are not present.
Both types of HSV are lifelong infections and cannot be cured. The viruses remain in the body even when symptoms are not active, and outbreaks can occur periodically. Although HSV infections may not always cause noticeable symptoms, they can still be transmitted to others.
It is essential to practice safe sexual behaviors, including using barrier methods like condoms, to reduce the risk of HSV transmission. Additionally, antiviral medications can help manage symptoms, reduce the frequency and duration of outbreaks, and decrease the risk of spreading the virus.
