It involves manipulating the pedals of a manual transmission vehicle in a specific manner to smoothly match the engine speed (rpm) to the road speed.
The name "heel and toeing" stems from the footwork involved in this technique. The driver uses the right foot to operate both the brake pedal and accelerator simultaneously, while the left foot remains clutch-controlled. When an impending downshift is required, the driver pivots the right foot to place the right edge of the sole on the brake pedal (heel) and rotates the foot inward until the right edge of the foot bridges the gap to the accelerator pedal (toe). This allows the driver to swiftly transition from braking to accelerating while executing a downshift without unsettling the vehicle's stability or causing excessive engine braking.
