The Golgi Complex, also known as the Golgi apparatus or Golgi body, is an organelle found in eukaryotic cells that is involved in the processing, modification, packaging, and transport of proteins and lipids. Named after Italian physiologist Camillo Golgi, who first identified it in 1898, the Golgi Complex is present in most eukaryotic organisms, including animal cells and plant cells.
The Golgi Complex consists of a series of flattened sacs called cisternae, which are stacked on top of each other like pancakes. These cisternae are interconnected and form a network within the cell. The Golgi Complex has three distinct regions or compartments: the cis-Golgi network, the medial-Golgi, and the trans-Golgi network. Proteins and lipids move through these compartments in a sequential manner.
The Golgi Complex receives proteins and lipids from the rough endoplasmic reticulum (ER) in small sacs called transport vesicles. Inside the Golgi Complex, these molecules undergo various modifications, such as the addition of sugars, phosphates, or other functional groups. These modifications allow the proteins and lipids to be sorted and targeted to their final destinations within the cell or outside of it.
Once the proteins and lipids have been modified, they are packaged into vesicles and budded off from the Golgi Complex. These vesicles move towards the cell membrane or other places within the cell, where they release their contents. Some vesicles may fuse with the cell membrane and release their contents outside of the cell as secreted proteins or lipids.
