GHGS stands for Greenhouse Gases. Greenhouse gases are gases that trap heat in the Earth's atmosphere, contributing to the greenhouse effect and leading to global warming. These gases effectively absorb infrared radiation, preventing it from escaping back into space. As a result, they contribute to the retention of heat in the Earth's atmosphere, leading to an increase in average global temperatures over time.
Common examples of greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), and water vapor (H2O). CO2 is the primary greenhouse gas responsible for human-induced climate change, mainly as a result of burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas. Methane is released from various sources, including agriculture, livestock, and the extraction of fossil fuels. Nitrous oxide is predominantly emitted from agricultural and industrial activities, as well as from the burning of fossil fuels.
The increasing concentration of GHGs in the atmosphere is primarily attributed to human activities, especially the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation. The enhanced greenhouse effect caused by these gases is a significant driver of climate change and its associated impacts, such as rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and altered ecosystems.
Efforts to reduce GHG emissions have become a global priority to mitigate climate change and achieve sustainable development. International agreements, such as the Paris Agreement, aim to limit the temperature increase below dangerous levels by reducing GHG emissions and promoting sustainable practices.
