Etymology of GENERAL MILLS
The name "General Mills" is a combination of two separate entities: the Washburn-Crosby Company and the Minneapolis Milling Company. The history of Washburn-Crosby Company dates back to 1856 when Cadwallader C. Washburn built his first flour mill in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Later, in 1866, the Washburn "B" Mill exploded, which led to a restructuring of the company. John Crosby, an employee of Washburn at the time, helped in the rebuilding process and became a partner in the business. The firm was then renamed Washburn-Crosby Company.
On the other hand, the Minneapolis Milling Company was established in 1854 by George H. Christian and his partners. It became known for producing high-quality flour. In 1866, it was purchased by different investors, including the Washburn-Crosby Company, which eventually acquired controlling interest in 1874.
